Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Best 20 Shows Pre-'72

As my live-show experience ran from '79 to '89, I was a Brent-era guy. Got to see many of the Fall '79 shows.

For the past couple years I have developed a taste for the sounds and set-lists from '72 to '77, and lovin' that Grateful Jazz.

Recently tho it has been refreshing to listen to some of the vintage shows from the early era, so I was hoping to get some direction as to maybe the best 20 or so recordings to enjoy from the Archive from the pre-'72 days, since I know there are some of you here that seem to prefer that version of the experience.

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations, I think it was 45 or so different show dates.

It's great to listen to the same band from so many different sonic perspectives.

Well, that is Bear territory and there are many stunning 'sonic journals' of his to choose from, such as http://archive.org/details/gd1968-10-12.sbd.miller.115593.flac16

I like this like breathing > http://archive.org/details/gd1968-01-20.sbd.miller.97340.sbeok.flac16

But, more then anything http://archive.org/details/gd_nrps70-06-24.aud.pcrp5.23062.sbeok.flacf
There are very few tapes that capture the place where peak GD playing and the energy (and participation) of the audience meet together and create something more.

I've thought about that. What would/could you do?

I was also going to recommend this show. Don't forget about 8/15 either.

11/14/71 and 11/15/71 is perhaps an even better 2 night run. I love all the shows that came in the months after Keith joined. Lit a spark under everyone's ass again and helped create so many delicious jams.

Most of my other favorites have been covered here already, although I don't think I saw 2/14/68. 2/22/69 won't be on any "best of" lists, but it's one of my favorites from the year.

2/22/69 would absolutely make a 'best of' list, it's easily one of the top 10 shows of the year!

I don't recall seeing that show on any best of lists (maybe best of '69), but yes I think it's certainly one of the best shows of the year. A perfect appetizer before the Fillmore West run.

pre 69 really isn't my bag, so I can only offer the obvious choices such as 12-01-66, 03-18-67, 02-14-68, 08-23-68 and leave more in depth to others

as for 69-71 here's a good basic list of a lot of well known nuggets, I'm positive I'm missing some, but you wanted to keep it at 20
69- 02-27, 03-01 04-05, 04-21, 04-22, 06-05
70 - 02-11, 02-13, 05-02, 09-19, 09-20
71- 04-28, 04-29, 07-02, 08-06, 11-07, 12-05, 12-14

Personally attended these shows; 1970-06-04, 1971-05-30, 1972-08-20, plus an early Kingfish show. Only the 1972 show, a Sunday afternoon at San Jose Civic Auditorium, was a disappointment. Really prefer the late 60s and very early 70s original lineups, and guitar tones. Official releases document the very best of these fairly well, but not going too far back in time these four shows strike me as unique for a couple reasons:
